Tonsil
and adenoid tissue is similar to the lymph to the lymph
nodes/glands found on the neck. Tonsils are in the
back of the throat and the adenoids are in behind the
nose.
Tonsils and adenoids help in the development of the
body’s
immune system in the first year or so of life and then
become less important for that function.
Thus, their removal later in life does not have any harmful side effects on
the body.
Tonsils and adenoids are often a source of repeated infections. If they are
enlarged, tonsils and adenoids can also obstruct the breathing. Tumors can
sometimes form in the tonsils. Symptoms of tonsil and adenoid problems
include sore
throat, fevers, bad breath, snoring, nasal congestion,
and difficulty breathing.
