Hoarseness
is a very broad term which means an abnormal voice or a
changed voice. A person can completely loose his/her voice;
or the voice may become weak, breathy, or strained. Hoarseness
usually means an abnormality in the vocal cords and the
voice box (larynx). Common causes of hoarseness include
irritation of the vocal cords called laryngitis which can
be caused by infection, heartburn and reflux, and by overuse
(shouting/excessive talking/singing). This hoarseness will
usually respond to voice rest, fluids, and occasionally,
antibiotics. However, hoarseness that lasts beyond a few
weeks can be more serious. People can develop polyps and
nodules which can cause long-lasting problems and often
require surgery. Even more concerning, tumors and cancer
can affect the vocal cords and cause hoarseness.
