Endoscopic Supraglottic Laryngectomy

Diet:
If you are sent home with a catheter within your nose, you will feed yourself through this catheter as directed.

Activity:
You may take short walks.

Avoid straining, strenuous exercise, or lifting over 10 lbs. for 4 weeks.

NO SWIMMING for 4 weeks after surgery.

Medications:
If antibiotics were prescribed, take all of them.

Follow directions for taking the pain medicine.

Do not take aspirin or products containing non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (i.e. Advil, Motrin, ibuprofen, etc.) These “thin the blood” and slow clotting of the blood.

Follow-up:
Return to my office 7-10 days after you are discharged from the hospital, call my office for an appointment.

Information:
Pain or numbness in the neck is normal after this operation. The pain is expected to reduce over the next 2-4 weeks.

Swelling in the neck is normal and will reduce over the first 4 weeks after surgery.

Call the doctor for excessive bleeding from the wound or fever over 100.5 degrees.

Call 911 if you have difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath.

You should make an appointment to see your speech therapist to undergo swallowing therapy.
