About Ear Wax

Glands in the ear canal produce ear wax or "cerumen". Ear wax serves an important purpose in that it help protect the ear drum against injury and infection by trapping dust, bacteria, and other particles. The ear is usually self-cleaning and the ear wax will dry up, become flaky, and fall out. Ideally, you should not clean your ear canal at all. If you absolutely must, do not use a q tip or, worse still, bobby pin etc. Q tips will often push more wax in than they'll take out and block your hearing. Q tips can also injure your ear canal and cause bleeding and infections. Q tips can even poke a hole in the ear drum and cause permanent damage.

Safer ways to clean the ear canal are:

1. A few drops of mineral oil or baby oil in the ear canal
2. Commercial preparations such as debrox.

You should see your doctor or an ENT physician if these simple remedies don’t help
